In this volume, Light Yagami continues his quest to rid the world of criminals. As he takes on the moniker of "Kira," he faces increasingly challenging ethical dilemmas and moral consequences of his actions. The volume explores the extent of Light's manipulation and how his actions impact those around him, including his father who is part of the police force. L, on the other hand, employs his keen intellect and unorthodox methods to track down Kira.

In this volume, Kira starts killing cops and also the FBI agents to hide his secret. Following the previous season, the detective who was following Light is tricked by Kira, and is forced to give the names of all the other FBI agents who are working on the Kira case. Shortly after, the detective, and all the other agents are killed in one fell swoop. Because of this, the Japanese police force are now scared and withdraw from the force and the Kira case. Anticipating this, L decided to remove his aura of anonymity and reveals himself to a select few individuals from the force that he trusts.

In the meanwhile, L orders to put to camera and microphone bugs in the house of Light’s Father and the Police Superintendent as he has his suspicions, since Ray Penber the FBI agent was trailing Light just before his death. Light realizes his room is bugged and ignores Ryuk the entire time, until he leaves his house and tells Ryuk that there may be cameras in his room, and Ryuk should help him find them.   

Volume 2 also introduces new characters, such as Misa Amane, a famous idol who obtains her own Death Note and becomes infatuated with Kira. She is recognized as the “Second Kira” by L, because he reads that the killing patterns seem to be different. Her involvement adds a new layer of complexity to the narrative as she becomes entangled in the power struggle between Light and L.
