A Silent Voice is a captivating manga written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Oima. The 7 part series revolves around a young schoolboy named Shoya Ishida, who is an impulsive, boisterous bully. Shoya, and his band of delinquents set their target of harassment on a deaf classmate named Shoko Nishimiya. Shoya and his gang employ various forms of bullying such as making fun of Shoko’s disability, and destroying her hearing aids.

The school eventually catches on to the scenes taking place, and thus disciplinary actions were placed on Shoya. As the punishment settles in, Shoya is subjected to dynamic shifts within the classroom and his friends because of the disciplinary measures taken against him. During this period, Shoya goes through a period of self reflection and explores themes such as guilt, remorse, and redemption.

At the same time, Shoko herself is struggling to navigate a hearing world as a deaf person. Even with the early onslaught of trouble between Shoya and Shoka, the duo find little potential in trying to connect and understand each other under the given circumstances, all the while navigating their separate complex school lives.
